Ecosexts are sexts imagined from lovers across the ecological spectrum of beings and objects. Akin to short poems or haikus, the sexts initially emerged during a residency in Hokkaido, Japan in 2016 and were later compiled into a small book (published through Particle books). For Real Life Fantasies curated by Patrice Sharkey (2017), the sexts are delivered to viewers via an SMS chatbot – just text ‘sext me’ to the phone number displayed in the video, anytime, anywhere.
Delving into romance, absurdity, science and senses, the sexts attempt a more-than-human perspective, yet are inevitably anthropomorphic, exemplifying the limitations of human language to truly imagine the world from the point of view of a crayfish, crystal, or millipede. Using romantic cliches and drawing from the endless variations of sex happening all around us, the ecosexts call into question constructed ideas around what is ‘normal’ or ‘natural’ when it comes to sex. There is no such thing as ‘nature’, only our perception of it.
